The question of what it means to be British has been a source of much political debate in Britain over the past half-century.
It has been the subject of debate since the birth of the United Kingdom, when the first Commonwealth nations were created in 1857.
But the debate has also focused on whether a new British identity can be created in the new world order of globalization and technological change.
The BBC World Service’s The Story of Britain program asked two people to explore this debate in 2017.
BBC News, The Story Of Britain, ‘We are British’, 1 August 2018.
